I’ve been lucky enough to spend nearly two decades around Gocycle, from joining Richard Thorpe as his first full-time employee in 2008, to helping support our growing Gocycle customer base at Fully Charged to this day.
Being among the first to ride the pre-production Gocycle G5 prototype feels like a full-circle moment – and while I’ve not been able to show you everything just yet, I can say with confidence that this is one of the most exciting leaps forward the brand has made.

The G5 is the seventh generation of the platform, built on 23 years of continuous refinement. Each iteration – G1, G2, G3, GS, GX and the most recent G4 series – has introduced meaningful steps in design, technology and ride experience. But the G5 brings some of the biggest changes we’ve seen and answers a number of minor gripes of previous models.

Where development of the G4 focused heavily on the front end with its advanced motor and redesigned fork, the G5 turns attention to the rear. The Cleandrive cover, which previously formed part of the bike’s structural integrity, is now purely cosmetic. This gives the engineering team far greater freedom in how the rear frame is constructed. The central pivot block, long known as the source of the occasional squeak, has been removed entirely, and for the first time, the bike uses a standard bottom bracket.

The biggest shift is the new drivetrain: a five-speed internal hub gear with a wider range, paired with a carbon belt drive. It’s cleaner, quieter and even lower-maintenance – all qualities I know Gocycle owners value.
Core features like the integrated Daytime Running Light (DRL) and predictive electronic shifting are thought to remain present across the G5 models.
A lot has changed behind the scenes, too. After the brand was acquired by Californian eBike company Aventon in early 2025, production has been on pause. However, if the G5 is the first insight into the next chapter, what lies ahead is very exciting and we cannot wait to see what’s next for Gocycle.

There are already whispers of a potential all-new electronics unit offering GPS tracking, motion sensing and geofencing.
This is just a teaser for now and what we’ve seen is of course subject to change for production, but the wait won’t be long. When full specs land, we’ll be ready with a detailed review and a proper first ride.
