Tern GSD R14 vs S10 LX — What’s the Difference?
At first glance, the R14 and S10 LX share the same compact, long-tail frame and car-replacing practicality that defines the Tern GSD. But under the skin, the setups differ in three key areas:
-
Drivetrain: The R14 features a Gates Carbon Belt Drive paired with the Rohloff E-14 electronic hub, offering near-instant shifting and zero maintenance. The S10 LX, meanwhile, uses a traditional chain and derailleur setup — lighter, but requiring more upkeep.
-
Braking: Both now feature the option for Bosch eBike ABS, bringing next-level confidence to heavy-load braking.
-
Battery Capacity: The R14 boasts dual 800 Wh batteries (1600 Wh total), while the S10 LX comes with a single 800 Wh pack, with the option to upgrade.
Both bikes sit on the latest Bosch Smart System platform, bringing GPS tracking, navigation, eBike Alarm, and full app connectivity — a big leap from the Gen 2 series.

More Power, More Payload
The Gen 3 GSD frame now supports up to 210 kg total weight, up from 200 kg, with a stronger rear rack rated to 100 kg. Maximum rider weight is also up to 130 kg.
That means more flexibility — whether it’s two kids, an adult passenger, or serious cargo. The stow-able foot decks now flip up neatly, while the wider kickstand feet and reinforced lock-stand make parking easier and safer.
For those new to the GSD concept, this is a bike designed to replace your car. Compact 20” wheels keep the centre of gravity low, while accessories like the Clubhouse+, Captain’s Chair, and Sidekick kits make it endlessly adaptable.

The Ride: Comfort and Control
Small tweaks have made a big difference in how the new GSD rides.
-
The geometry feels more planted and stable under load.
-
Suspension forks and wider tyres soak up the chatter.
-
A new USB-C charge port and improved lever ergonomics show Tern’s attention to detail.
As Michael and Rich point out in the video, it’s smoother, more refined, and somehow more composed than ever — even compared to an already-excellent Gen 2.
Who’s Each Model For?
Tern GSD R14 – for riders who clock up serious mileage, tackle hilly terrain, or simply want the best. The Rohloff E-14 + belt drive combo means no maintenance, instant shifting, and effortless power delivery.
Tern GSD S10 LX – ideal for everyday riders who still want Bosch reliability, long range, and full cargo capability at a slightly lower price point. Perfect for families looking to leave the car parked up more often.
Fully Charged Verdict
Tern have refined the world’s best compact cargo platform without changing its essence. The Gen 3 GSD is stronger, smarter, and more connected — a true evolution for e-mobility.
With Bosch Smart System integration, ABS braking, and a ride quality that borders on luxury, it remains the benchmark for what a modern electric cargo bike should be.
