Bosch eBikes: The Technology Shaping 2027

Bosch is continuing to push the boundaries of eBike technology, with 2027 bringing a new wave of updates designed to make riding an eBike smarter, safer, and more powerful. Highlights include the new Hub Line motor, lighter batteries as well as AI-powered assistance tools and advanced theft protections. Cool features such as Trick Check and updates to the Live Data Interface are also coming this year.

More power, less weight

Many of Bosch’s latest hardware developments are focused on making eBikes more powerful without compromising their design. They have placed a focus on making parts more stylish and less heavy and bulky, making them easier to use and transport.

One very exciting development is the new Hub Line drive unit, which takes a different approach by integrating the motor in the rear hub, as well as it being a quieter and more discreet system, weighing approximately 2.3kg. With a 360Wh battery, Bosch state riders can travel over 80km , with integrated digital theft protection that automatically locks the motor and the battery when the bike is switched off. Bosch has also released a set of new batteries. The PowerTube 360 is their slimmest battery to date; it is just 2.1kg, providing 360Wh of capacity with a sleek design that blends into the bike’s frame. At the other end of the spectrum, the PowerTube 720 expands Bosch’s battery portfolio for riders prioritising longer-distance riding with 720 watt hours.

For Cargo Line, Performance Line CX-R, and CX, riders, Performance Upgrade 2.0 delivers up to 120Nm of torque and up to 600% support at speeds of up to 15km/hr, while the updated Active Line Plus offers 60Nm of torque and up to 340% support for those looking for a smaller, lighter package. The support can be adjusted in the Flow App.

Smarter technology, tailored to the rider

A major focus in Bosch’s new updates is making its eBike technology increasingly adaptable to individual riding styles. New updates to the eBike Flow App and the Smart System give riders control over how their bike responds to them, the environment, and potential theft threats.

One of the standout features is the upgraded Extended Boost, allowing riders to customise how much the motor assists them over obstacles such as rocks, roots, and steps with maximum support of up to two meters, allowing riders to tackle technical sections with confidence. The Extended Boost can be adjusted in the Flow App using a slider tool to choose desired support.

For Performance Line CX and CX-R riders, the new Drivetrain Tensioner is designed to make power propulsion feel more immediate. Software pre-tensions the drivetrain to reduce free travel between pedalling and propulsion, allowing the motor to respond almost instantly when power is applied giving the rider full control. Additionally, improved eShift technology allows compatible Rohloff and Shimano hub gears to shift through several gears at once, automatically keeping riders in the correct gear as they change speeds.

Bosch is also implementing AI assistance into the riding experience. The new eBike Assistant, currently in beta, integrates information from Bosch’s help centre, website and user manuals to answer rider questions immediately on the Flow App.

Turning the eBike into a connected platform

Perhaps the biggest development for businesses coming in 2027 for Bosch is their move towards a fully connected cycling ecosystem. The Connected Biking Platform, will allow fleet operators to monitor the location, condition, and usage of bikes in real time, helping them plan servicing, charging, and deployment more efficiently.

Further platform updates to Bosch devices include Trick Check which can automatically recognise jumps, wheelies, manuals, and stoppies, recording metrics such as distance and duration and provides direct feedback via audible signal. Additionally, heart-rate data can now be saved and analysed in the Flow App, and eBikes are now fitted with a Live Data Interface that can connect with third-party devices such as Garmin watches and GPS computers.

With faster charging, smarter software, integrated security, and increasingly intelligent motors, Bosch is making it abundantly clear that the next generation of their eBikes is at the forefront of the industry, as per usual.
